e and i went to hastings this weekend for a small break - it was very lovely. we strolled along the beach and up onto the cliff tops. we stayed in a modernish hotel with decor deeply in the last decade but nice fittings and a good breakfast. we ate dinner (terrine, turbot, spring rubarb &c) at st clements which is a very decent sort of place. today we went to an aquarium (one of my not so guilty pleasures) and had a roast lunch. good times.

well, another week of january has shimmied by in a blur of emails and me trying to work out how i will get through. i went out west again on tuesday night to have bibendum's roast chicken for dinner with e after her drawing class. on friday i went to jamie's birthday party and met an old friend form school - good times, but perhaps one too many camparis. to be honest i fear that there will be a few weeks yet of me just trying to get through before things let up.

delicious meal this week at stjb&w, most significant highlight was coddled duck egg with cauliflower cream, smoked eel and croutons. on friday, e and i went to pulpo and finally got a table. it was quite good (i enjoyed some cuttlefish very much), but i am not sure it was any better than barrafina, brindisa etc.. last night e and i went to the pembroke arms - this is rapidly becoming my favourite pub in london, not only as it seems consistently to have mild on tap. not a bad first week back at work, even if the week was rather busy.

how nice for me to have a weekend almost totally at liberty: so far i have eaten a kipper, bought a bottle of wine, had a bath and done my ironing for the next two weeks. i have done quite a bit of cooking over the last few weeks with big meals on christmas day (turkey &c) and boxing day (glazed ham). for new year's eve i cooked dinner for e: vegetable essence with lardo, anchovies in green sauce, black pudding, shoulder of lamb with turnips, carphilly and then a pear in chocolate sauce. i owe my reader (s?) some pictures, and by god they will come.
