adam and joe are back on the radio: hurray!

e and i went back to st j b&w again last night for some early seaon grouse action. to pick at while the birds got the treatment we had a charming salad of pork scratchings and chicory. with the bird came burgundy, watercress, soothing bread sauce and a tasty crouton of foie and grouse innards. the bird tasted of a lovely death: savoury, a but musty, occasionally bitter. good times indeed.

i have sneaked in a day off today, and decided to celebrate by going down to brixton for a pizza with home made ham at franco manca. this was jolly good, though not perhaps good enough to warrant the journey for no other reason, and i must say the organicist agenda pains me deeply. this afternoon laundry, napping and perhaps some shopping for meat awaits me.

norfolk holiday food - poulet poche a la creme avec crepes parmentier from simon hopkinson:

Wednesday, August 05, 2009

time out from late night spreadsheet action to tell you all about holiday resto action from norfolk: e and i did the decent thing and had dinner at morston hall. for the uninitiated, this involves a no choice menu (beetroot soup, lots of little egg bits, seabass, sirloin) then a decision between cheese and some clafoutis. in fact, you don't even get a choice about when you start which makes for a very wedding breakfast like vibe. to be honest the eggy stuff - parmesan custard and quail egg in artichoke - was best by a way and some of the food - a rather mean slice of sirloin - reminded me of the food at a wedding. nonetheless, with a bottle of savigny-les-baune, it was a fun night out but i would not say, in michelin terms, that it is worth a detour.

back from a nice week on the norfolk coast - quite a few crabs gave their lives in a good cause. on small day trip to cromer i found roast chicken and other stories in a second hand bookshop, which made the second brilliant book i read on holiday (the first being smiley's people). on the way back i was FURIOUS at the strike.
